Stereo Power Amplifiers
Technology
Chord Electronics has successfully implemented high frequency power
supplies which operate at a much higher frequency than conventional power supplies
and are therefore much better suited to high power applications. As a result Chord
amplifiers are smaller and lighter, they run cooler, deliver more power and respond
faster. Chord amplifiers feature lower distortion and an absolutely dead-quiet background.
Specifically, dynamic coupling of the power supply rails
means power delivery is always balanced and free from ground loop modulation distortion.
The power supply rails operate at frequencies well above that which most amplifiers can
accommodate. This, and other advanced techniques, enables the ultra high frequency low ESR
power supply to store a great deal more energy far more efficiently. Clipping is virtually
impossible. Finally, the output signal path is totally free of any fuses or
sound-degrading resistive components often employed for overload sensing. Chord
Electronics amplifiers
are designed to surpass the highest safety and electromagnetic interference
standards.
The amplifier sections are also highly sophisticated designs that
make the most of the best high voltage, lateral structure MOSFETs
available. The result is a sliding bias class A/B design with all drive
circuitry operating in class A. At usual listening levels most of the
music will be reproduced in class A thus Chord amplifiers combine the
subtlety and musicality of a good valve design with the punch and
accuracy of 'state of the art' solid state products.
A high current filter ensures that the amplifier is shielded from
disturbed mains as well as ensuring that the mains is untouched by
emissions from the amplifier. The output from the power supply uses a
truly innovative “Dynamic Coupling” technique whereby the positive and
negative rails are mutually coupled by a strong magnetic flux. The result being that if a high demand is put on one rail, the
energy required is actually drawn equally from both rails. This keeps
the amplifier balanced dynamically and the reference point perfectly
clean. Magnetic current sensors provide electronic shutdown.
SPM 650
The new Chord SPM 650 entry level power amplifier utilizes Chord’s
renowned high frequency power supply techniques and proprietary lateral
structure dual-die MOSFETs. The SPM 650 retains the clarity, style and
outstanding dynamics of Chord’s larger amplifiers and will easily drive
low impedance loudspeakers. The SPM 650 delivers 130 watts per channel
into 8 ohms or 170 watts into 4.
"Entry level? Hardly... they might be our introduction to the
Chord family, but they are hardly what others would call 'entry level'.
Packed full of the audio superiority you expect from Chord, these
elegant new units ensure that entry level has never looked or sounded so
good."
- John Franks, Founder Chord Electronics.

SPM 1050
The SPM 1050 (above) is the newest stereo power amplifier. Using Chord’s
latest low distortion amplifier circuitry and proprietary lateral
structure dual-die MOSFETs, the SPM 1050 is able to drive more difficult
loudspeaker loads with clarity and precision.
The heart of the amplifier is powered using Chord’s own 2KW high
frequency switch mode power supply and unique dynamic coupling design.
This allows instantaneous power to be taken from both power rails
simultaneously when the music demands, resulting in perfect balance and
dynamic precision. This technology is complemented by a large bank of
energy storage capacitors that are recharged by the power supply many
thousands of times per second, giving the amplifier huge reserves and
the ability to react effortlessly to any signal.
The SPM 1050 comfortably delivers 200 watts into 8 ohms and
connectivity is achieved via true balanced XLR style or RCA phono inputs
and two pairs of gold plated loudspeaker binding posts. As with all
Chord products each unit is machined from solid aluminum for a superb
rigid construction that gives unsurpassed vibration damping with
stunning looks to match.
SPM 1200E
The SPM 1200E is Chord's most popular stereo amplifier, delivering
350 watts of heart-stopping power and a completely involving performance. The
SPM 1200E exemplifies Chord's innovative technology which
allows delicate signals to be controlled with the absolute minimum of interference and
coloration. (Looks almost identical to the SPM 1400, see Mono-block section for
image.)
SPM 4000
The commanding SPM 4000 is Chord's largest stereo amplifier.
This 480 watt powerhouse, pictured below, provides enormous reserves of instantly delivered, precisely
controlled power for a breath-taking performance. With almost no sonic signature
this amp delivers an incredibly transparent, fast, detailed and natural
presentation that you just have to hear.
"We bombarded this amplifier with classical, blues and jazz
recordings which feature difficult to reproduce passages. Our
auditioning recordings included Todo Sobre Di Madre which contains
delicate inner detail, brass, strings, tympani, unique classical program
material coupled with equally unique jazz styles. This CD is a total
workout for audio systems and, with only a few exceptions, will burden
any amplifier under the sun. The SPM 4000 handled this program with
utmost ease, stunningly faithful to the instruments' sound and
gracefully melodic. Turn this amplifier on, sit back and relax, with
some of the best solid state sound currently on the market. This isn't
just another good amplifier, this one is great." - Ernie Fisher, The
Inner Ear.
